Homework April 24th

In Job 1-2 we learn that

-Humanity believes if you are a good person and do good things good things will be done unto you. If you are a bad person and do bad things bad will be done unto you.

-God isn’t at all what we believe him to be. He lets bad things happen to Job even though Job is a good person. It’s almost as if God is doing the bad things himself since he is allowing Satan to do it.

-What relationships are in Job?

-They are good people and are very wealthy. With a “wedge’ around them.

I didn’t understand how Job wasn’t depressed at some degree after his family died, or why the author didn’t express some sort of emotion. It seemed inhumain, I think if anyone lost their family they would automatically show some sort of feeling towards the loss. Even if it was happeness, there has to be something there that the author is not portraying.

4/11 post

the only example i can think of off the top of my head, is our school system.

at school teachers tell us to do work, and we do it (most of the time), and half the time we don’t question it at all. i mean their the teachers and were supposed to do what they say. at the same time, some of the things teachers make us do are completely irrelevant to our subjects or topics, but we don’t really question the fact that its irrelevant, we just do it.

in elementary school i remember walking in a straight line when we would go to art class, or P.E. of course some of us joked around but if we did, we got yelled at, so eventually we stopped. we walked the straight line silently, without question. it was almost like none of us had our own train of thought, we just did what we were told to do, and that was it.

i dont know what else to say. :/

trial thoughts

the trial was very intense.

i thought it was a good experience, but i thought it was mostly unfair. i thought the alive teams had a way easier fight than the dead teams, and thats why the alive teams won from both classes. the american dream was easier to prove alive from the literature we used, rather than dead.

i thought we should have had more time to work together as a group in class. working outside of class made it harder to work as a team, because of schedules and the weekends didn’t seem to work out so well either.

overall i didn’t like the trial much, although it was interesting because it was something completely different from anything we had done in class before.

mayella & tom comparing, contrasting.

Tom Robinson, the accused rapist, and Mayella Ewell the accuser of Tom are similar and different in a lot of ways.

They are alike because they are both shunned from another. Tom is shunned by the white people because he is black. Mayella is shunned by both races because she is a Ewell.  he Tom seems to be a good man, but still because of his race he is judged. The jury knows that Tom is innocent to raping Mayella, yet they mark him of being guilty of it because of the color of his skin.

They have many similarities they also have some differences. Tom is loved by his race,  he has many friends and family who love him dearly. Mayella on the other hand is hated by whites and blacks which gives her nothing except her family who doesn’t even like her, and her father who takes advantage of her body. Mayella is a liar, she says Tom raped her when she knows that it was really her father. Tom tells the truth, he admits all his past and he admits all that happened.

These few chapters really upset me. The unfairness of it all is despicable. Tom and Mayella are fairly similar compared to the way they are alike. They have a lot in common but have more different qualities.

THE END :)

Goodness of Humanity or Unrealistic betrayel?

In the book Scout basically saves Atticus, but she doesn’t realize it. Scout is very sheltered by Atticus, he tries to keep her innocence by teaching her things but only teaching her good and kind of complicating the bad to not make it seem as harsh as it is. For instance, when Scout had no idea what “rape” was she asked Atticus and he responded by telling her it was “carnal knowledge of a female by force and without consent”.  I think Atticus explained it like this because he doesn’t want Scout to really know what it means. I think he wants her to only know the good in life, because he see’s all the bad, and he doesn’t want Scout to. When Scout walked in on the “gang” scene she had no idea what was going on because she was so sheltered. I mean she is only 8, so things like that shouldn’t be obvious to her, right? I’m not sure what side I’m taking. Because although I agree she shouldn’t have known what was happening, the way Harper Lee shows Scout I believe she should have also.

This post is confusing to me. I can’t choose which way I want to finish this off.

Scout, though only 8, seems like if she would have examined the situation deeper, she could have figured it out. Yet, since she is only 8, I think she shouldn’t be able to. But Scout is bright and I would think she would figure it out just by looking at the men walking up to her father in a big group like they did, that they had the intention of hurting someone, as in Atticus. I don’t know, maybe I’m seeing this all the wrong way. I just don’t know Mr. Amico.

I mean can you enlight me here?

Oh geeze.

Alright, so I think mockingbirds represent people who do nothing wrong in the world, but still bad things happen to them. For instance, Martin Luther King Jr. was a person with a dream of helping america grow as a whole, by accepting different colors and races; yet Martin Luther King Jr. was shot for expressing his dream. I think the mockingbirds represent things like that….

The Chapter 9 thing…

Uncle Jack didn’t look at Scout’s side of the story, he automatically assumed and hit her. Then after hearing Scout’s version he realized he was in the wrong. His point of veiw had to change a little in order to see why he was in the wrong for hitting Scout.

:) 1/24

Scout, Jem, and Dill all live in Maycomb. Their lives are pretty simple, no worries, they love to play and read stories together. They are all scared of Boo Radley, mostly because they don’t know him, they just know what they have heard. They have heard all bad things about him, though most of what they heard were probably rumors. They said Boo Radley poisoned the pecans that fall onto the school yard ground, and that he got blamed for things that weren’t even his fault.

Basically, Scout, Jem and Dill are scared of a man they don’t at all know, but little do they know, he will one day save Scout and Jem’s lives. I think Boo Radley represents fear itself, its scary to think about, but once you face a fear its not as scary as you once thought. In the book, I don’t think Boo Radley is really a bad guy, just the things people say about him are.

So thats all. :)

what i think To Kill a Mockingbird will be about…

I read a book review on “To Kill a Mockingbird”and my interpretation on the review is that the main character “scout” is a little white girl who hasn’t yet seen racism at its worst. The little girl, at age 6, is brought up by her father and house keeper with a brother entering the 5th grade. Neither of the kids realizes racism until their father, who is a lawyer, takes a case defending a black man. During the case “scout” and her older brother get teased constantly. The black man is found guilty and “scout” feels horrible about it, the black man tries to escape from jail and he gets shot, which leaves “scout” feeling even worse. After the trial and everything a man comes after “scout” and her brother trying to kill them, in order to get back at their father for defending a black man. Luckily a neighbor, Mr. Radley, comes and saves them by killing the man. This gives “scout” some hope for improvement in the unjust world she lives in.

What can we use blogs for in english?

We can use it for communicating with Mr. Amico, or for class discussions,  or to write essays (instead of wasting paper). Whatever Mr. Amico wants to use blogs for, I guess.
